Temperament of the Breed
Their temperament is most genial and they love to be in the company of others, be it dogs or people. Affectionate and loyal, Basset Hounds are good with children and will usually find contentment with other pets. Because of their need for companionship, they will not do well for long periods without attention.
Better suited to an indoor or outdoor lifestyle?
It is fine to keep the dogs in an apartment. However, they are not very active indoors. So, it is important that they are provided taken outside and allowed to play for hours to their heart’s content. They will not need a yard for themselves in order to exercise but lot of opportunities do need to be given for them to work out and stay healthy and fit.
Are they suited to homes with kids?
Since Basset Hounds are sweet-tempered, affectionate and friendly and relaxed in temperament, they are very well-suited to families with children. They typically enjoy being around kids and are very gentle with them. However, since they have a laid back attitude, Bassets often need to be protected from being tormented by young children!
Bassets will take to the lead readily but because they are a scent hound will keep their nose to the ground and can be carried away with pursuit. A strong hand is needed and proper restraints required to make walking a pleasant experience for both dog and owner. A secure, fenced yard is the best answer for exercise and safety.

Exercise Needs
The Basset Hound is not very active indoors. Hence it needs to be given plenty of exercises to help it stay fit and slim. Apart from a minimum daily long walk the dog should frequently be given chances to run and play.
Their low-slung stature makes them somewhat difficult for one adult to lift so consider this before deciding if this breed is right for you.
The dog has got a smooth and shorthaired coat. It is a constant shedder. This is easy to keep clean, care for and groom. As grooming measure the dog’s coat needs to be combed and brushed with a firm bristle brush regularly. Washing/shampooing of the dog must be done only when needed. Other grooming measures to be undertaken include wiping under the ear every week and time to time trimming of toenails.

The basset hounds have extremely long ears that are prone to developing even potentially fatal ear diseases if allowed to dangle on the ground or in food regularly. Overfeeding the dogs also creates problems as the dogs may then become overweight and place too great a load (of their bodies) on their short-heavy legs and spine. This may lead to lameness and also paralysis. The dogs are prone to get bloated too. So, it is advisable to feed the dogs two or three small meals a day in place of one large meal.
