About Irish Wolfhound

Country of Origin, History of Irish Wolfhounds

The Irish Wolfhound dates back to the 18th century. Several writings on that period refer to these hounds for their great size, strength and greyhound like shape.

They are described as the largest and most beautiful of the dog. They measured about 36 inches high, generally of a white or cinnamon colour and somewhat like the Greyhound but more robust.

Due to their ability to visualize and perceive the landscape, the Irish Wolfhounds were bred for long solitary hunts. Once used to hunt wolves, these dogs should appear as if they are “fast enough to catch a wolf, and strong enough to kill it”.

In recent times, symbolizing their strength, the Irish Wolfhound has been adopted as a symbol by different rugby codes in Ireland.

General Appearance Of The Dog

A gentle giant would be a good description for the breed known as Irish Wolfhound . Considered the tallest of all recognized breeds, this dog can reach heights of 7 ft. while standing on his hind legs.

They are remarkable in combining power and swiftness with keen sight. They are very muscular and strong but very graceful in their movements.

The head and neck are carried high and the tail is carried with an upward sweep. The Irish Wolfhounds should also appear to be longer than they are tall.

Although gigantic in size, the Wolfhounds should not to be confused with being the heaviest, as their structure should be similar to that of a Greyhound, with a very broad and deep chest that tucks up.

Coat:

They are generally rough-coated. Their color may be grey, brindle, red, black, white, fawn, and wheaten.

Irish Wolfhound Personality Traits

Dog with lovers

Temperament

The Irish Wolfhound is a sight hound, bred to course prey, so caution should be exercised if the pet is off lead. Characteristic pursuit of prey can lead this breed into a harmful situation.

Training is often easy but requires a gentle, firm approach. Loud demands will only confuse this breed and cause it to withdraw.

As their name suggest, these dogs love water.

Better suited to an indoor or outdoor lifestyle?

Though gentle and loving, their large size and sometimes clumsy movements require more space than an apartment will allow. A safe, enclosed yard will serve Irish Wolfhounds best for exercise as will frequent short walks on lead.

Are they suited to homes with kids?

They are great with children and consider themselves part of the family.

Irish Wolfhound Activity Level

Exercise Needs

Because of their large size and slow growth, it is important to let puppies decide how much exercise they need. Maturity is not reached until around 2 years of age and development of quality bone structure is most important.

Grooming

Grooming requires frequent brushing and nail clipping and occasional bathing. This should not be difficult for most owners but because of their size, might best be handled professionally.
