Country of Origin, History of Boerboels
The name Boerboel derives from the Afrikaans words boer which means farmer, and "boel" which is a short form of "boelhond" which means bulldog.
Historically, around 1850s a bulldog and a mastiff were crossed and the new dog was called the "Boer Hunting Dog". In packs, they could even hunt leopards and baboons.
In South Africa, traditionally the white population kept the Boerboel to protect their families and properties.
Between 1995 - 2000, the Boerboel was first introduced as a purebred dog to the world, including the United States.
