Country of Origin, History of Lowchens
Dogs looking similar to the Lowchen have been spotted in many art pieces as far back as the sixteenth century. However, itt is yet to be ascertained whether these dogs are indeed Lowchens or Bichon Frise trimmed in the 'Lion cut'.
It is believed that the rich and elite people of Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands used to keep Lowchens in the late nineteenth century. The were first spotted in Brtain in 1968 and were recognized by the UK Kennel Club in 1971.
They were then introduced in the USA in 1971 when the Löwchen Club of America (LCA) was formed. In 1996, the AKC recorgnized the Lowchens under the Miscellaneous category and finally in 1999, Lowchens were included in the Non-Sporting Dog group.
